In the vibrant beats of Senegal, a musical soul named You MKNJ found his rhythm. Born on August 8, 1975, in Dakar, Senegal.
Youssoupha Diop, aka You MKNJ, embodies the essence of Senegalese music, especially from the ’90s. Starting his musical journey in the lively streets of Fass Mbao, You MKNJ faced early challenges, losing his mom in 1982 and his dad in 1990. These hardships became his muse, prompting him to find solace and self-expression in music. Around the mid-’90s, You MKNJ ventured into Senegalese rap, mingling with groups like “Le Daara J,” “PBS,” and “Peefras,” collaborating with other talented artists. In 1995, fate intervened, bringing You MKNJ and like-minded individuals together to form “Makkanj.” Their debut album, “Natange,” released in 2006 and making waves in 2008, marked a significant chapter in Dakar’s music scene. Fast forward to 2011; You MKNJ joined the dynamic ensemble “Afreecan Dingkelu,” a musical journey that spanned until 2015.
